Job Description

The Billing and Coding Specialist is responsible for compiling all billing and diagnosis codes, summarizing the data for submission to the billing entity and is responsible for verifying the existence of documentation which supports billing intentions on the patient chart. The Billing and Coding Specialist should have the ability to analyze and interpret patient medical records to identify and determine amount and nature of billable services. He/she must possess characteristics necessary to maintain a code of strictest confidence of patient and departmental records; must have the ability to perform numerous tasks simultaneously with minimal errors. He/she must have excellent oral communication skills; must be capable of accepting full responsibility for the performance of assigned tasks; and must be able to transition into several roles with minor problems.

High School graduate or GED required.


Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a medical records department with knowledge of record keeping and medical terminology. Experience with hospice billing. Must be able to type, operate a computer, and enter data through a PC using a standard keyboard.

Physical Demands
Office work is primarily sedentary, however, walks, stands, sits and uses other physical motions in performing daily activities.

Mental Demands
Must have the ability to research, correct, and resubmit denied or rejected claims.

Special Demands
Knowledge of McKesson Horizon Healthcare billing processes.
