The Billing Representative is responsible for insurance/billing clerical duties, including review and verification of patient account information against insurance specification, resolve routine patient billing inquiries and problems, enter data electronically to process charges, submit claims in a timely manner, post payments, work denials, and follow up on balances due from insurance companies in a timely manner. Must analyze procedures and diagnosis coding using ICD-9 codes. Process monthly reports from accounts receivable. Stay updated on billing regulations including Medicare and Medicaid. Answers all incoming calls. Covers other staff positions as needed. The Billing Representative maintains good public relations with hospital personnel, physicians and their staff, insurance companies, and patients. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Manages and implements various accounting policies, procedures and systems, payroll functions and operational procedures.
Assist and monitors procedures performed by the hospital's accounting department to ensure that all work is completed in a timely manner and is accurate.
Ensures the Accounting Department is in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
Maintain general ledger in included the preparation of journal entries, coding of invoices, closing books monthly , and setting up new accounts. Investigates any problems that arise and finds solutions.
Ability to analyze account trends and causes.
Excellent working knowledge of billing, collections and insurance claims, third party payers and private insurance.
Assists Accounting Department staff with balancing problems when reconciling hospital bank accounts.
Performs balance sheet reconciliations.
Assists with auditors at various times to provide explanations of supporting materials and procedures, and other data as necessary.
Contribute to department and organization special projects as assigned.
Is a resource person for tax information for the hospital?
Tests all systems modifications and enhancements for the accounting department before implementation. Documents all testing and re-testing.
Maintains accounting records for fixed assets.
Assists with the interviewing, hiring, termination and annual performance evaluations of staff.
Maintains a good working relationship within the department and when other departments.
Provides assistance training to Accounting Department staff; orients new staff members.
Maintains affiliation with professional organizations; attends continuing education classes.
Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean.
Completes annual educational requirements.
Maintains regulatory requirements.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
Wears identification while on duty.

Participates on various Hospital committees as requested.
Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.
Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and corporate compliance.
Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to personnel and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Actively participates in the department's continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

Regulatory Requirements:
Bachelors of Science Degree in Accounting, CPA preferred.
Minimum of three years experience in accounting, preferably in a hospital setting.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Language Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages preferred.
Excellent computer knowledge.
Experience in use of Microsoft Excel, Lotus, Quatro Pro, etc.
