Job Summary: Responsible for accurately abstracting and reporting data regarding the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients and submitting data to the Mississippi Cancer Registry. Responsible foe ensuring accuracy and integrity of the medical record abstract data.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Analyzes and abstracts cancer related information from patients' medical records via keying the information into the mainframe medical record abstract system.Using ICD-9 coding, codes all carcinomas, sarcomas, melanoma, leukemias and lymphomas cases at the facility.Compiles statistical reports within the designated timeframe.Assumes responsibility for cross-checking quality, accuracy and completeness of abstracted material.Performs reviews of medical records to ensure completed oncology information.Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments. Works closely with physicians and Pathology.Performs performance improvement functions through data collection and documentation review.Willing to accept additional assignments.Must be able to keep up with workload. Maintains a good working relationship within the department and other departments.Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.Completes annual education requirements.Maintains regulatory requirements.Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.Completes inservices and returns in a timely fashion.Attends annual review and department inservices, as scheduled.Attends at least 75% of staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
Regulatory Requirements: Associates degree in Healthcare or related field and or graduate of an approved school of medical record technology and two years of cancer registrar coding experience, or successful completion of independent study course conducted by American Health Information Management Association. Certification required: , Must have a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification from NCRA-National Cancer Registrars Association graduate or equivalent. Ability to work with physicians in a collaborative manner. Knowledge of TJC standards and state medical record requirements.Language Skills: Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
